The Circus
Located
in the heart of Basseterre, is this English-style roundabout which was
created in 1867 and modeled after London's Piccadilly Circus. It has in
its center a four sided clock. From the Circus one can visit many of the
shops and businesses that are located in the nation's capital. Some of
these businesses include the TDC Mall, Island Hopper,
Rams Duty Free, the Pelican Shopping Mall, the Circus Grill restaurant,
and the Ballahoo Restaurant.
St.
George's Anglican Church
The Church has seen its share of disasters.
This church of Georgian architecture and Christian Notre Dame style was
built by the French in 1670. It was then burned to the ground by the
British in 1706 and rebuilt four years later. It was then named after
the patron saint of England. It was destroyed again, once by an
earthquake, and twice more by fire. The present building was built in
1869. However, the graves in the churchyard date from the early 1700's.
Independence
Square
This
square was built in 1790 for slave auctions and council meetings. It was
officially renamed in 1983 to commemorate the independence of the island
Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis from Great Britain. There are a few
stores located in this part of town some of which include the Spencer
Cameron Art Gallery and Avis rent a car.
The
Roman Catholic Church
This beautiful church is located on the
East side of the Independence Square. It is open for service on Sundays
and welcomes visiting worshippers.
