Nevis has a population of about 9,000. St. Kitts, however has a population of about 35,000 people. The
wild green vervet monkeys on the island by far out number the people
with a population of 125,000. They can be found in the rain forests of
both islands and the South East Peninsular of St. Kitts.

trees.
Education
Free and compulsory between the ages of 5
and 16. There are 25 government primary schools, 7 government secondary
schools and 7 private schools. The St. Kitts & Nevis College of
Further Education meets
the technical education needs of the labour force.
Economy
St. Kitts & Nevis has an agricultural
economy, the mainstay of which is the sugar industry. As the world sugar
price has been very low in the past few years and several sugar crops
have been badly damaged by hurricanes and other adverse climatic
conditions, the Government has responded by trying to broaden both the
agricultural and industrial economy of the country. Fishing is also
growing in commercial importance. Manufacturing is dominated by sugar
products; textiles and drinks are also produced. A thriving electronics
and data processing sector is the principal success story from the
Government’s diversification policy. Tourism is also seen as a
promising growth area and is developing rapidly, especially on Nevis and
the Frigate Bay area in St. Kitts.
The UK, Canada and the USA are the islands’ main trading partners.
