Drinking Water:

Safe spring water comes from numerous volcanic springs around the island.

Appropriate Attire:

Beach attire is appropriate for the beach but not the town, shops or restaurants. Please refrain from short shorts, bikinis and bare chests in these places. Informal, but conservative, clothing is the standard on the island.

Time Zone:

Atlantic Standard Time, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time and the same as Eastern Daylight Time.

Currency/Money:

The official currency for St. Kitts & Nevis is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC). Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of EC$100, 50, 20, 10, and 5. Coins are in denominations of EC$1, and 25, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents. It is fixed to the US dollar at US$1.00 = EC$2.70. US and Canadian currencies, travelers checks and major credit cards are welcome in most places on the island.

Credit Cards:

Visa and American Express are widely accepted, Access/MasterCard and Diners Club have more limited acceptance. Check with your credit card company for details of merchant acceptability and other services which may be available.

Banks:

The following banks can be found on the island: The Bank of Nova Scotia, Barclays Bank PLC, Royal Bank of Canada, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank Ltd., Bank of Nevis Ltd., Nevis Co.-Operative Banking Co. Ltd. Banking hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 3:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m. The St. Kitts & Nevis National Bank is also open from 8:30 am - 11:00 am on Saturdays.

(The Royal Bank of Canada, The Bank of Nova Scotia, Barclays Bank and National Bank all offer "ATM Plus & VISA" service so that you can access your account in USA or Canada with your bank cards.)

Currency restrictions:

There are no restrictions on the import or export of local currency. There is free import of foreign currency, subject to declaration. Export of foreign currency is limited to the amount imported and declared.
